When is Sakat Chauth Celebrated?

Sakat Chauth is observed on the Krishna Paksha Chaturthi of Magha month (January–February). The vrat is broken only after Moonrise (Chandra Darshan), making it similar to Sankashti Chaturthi.

Significance of Sakat Chauth Vrat

The word “Sakat” means danger or obstacle. This vrat is believed to:

Remove obstacles from life

Protect children from illness and misfortune

Fulfill wishes with Lord Ganesha’s blessings

Women observe nirjala vrat (without water) and worship Ganpati Bappa as Vighnaharta.

Sakat Chauth Vrat Katha (Sacred Story)

According to Hindu scriptures, once there lived a poor Brahmin woman who loved her son dearly. She heard about the importance of Sakat Chauth Vrat and decided to observe it for her child’s well-being. Due to extreme poverty, she had no food, sweets, or offerings for Lord Ganesha.

Despite this, she observed the vrat with pure devotion and faith, fasting the entire day without food or water. At night, after moonrise, she offered simple prayers with folded hands.

Lord Ganesha, pleased with her devotion, appeared before her disguised as a poor man and asked for food. Even though she had nothing, the woman offered whatever little she could arrange. Seeing her selfless nature, Lord Ganesha revealed his true form and blessed her.

With Lord Ganesha’s blessings, her son lived a long, healthy life, and her poverty ended. Since then, Sakat Chauth vrat katha is read every year to seek Lord Ganesha’s divine protection for children.
